Bard on the Bandstand 2016: A Midsummer Night's Dream

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" deals with the universal theme of love and its complications: lust, disappointment, confusion, marriage. In our 2016 version, it is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius! Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. To escape the arranged marriage, she and Lysander elope into the woods. "The course of true love never did run smooth" says Lysander.  Demetrius follows them, and he is pursued by Helena, who nurses an unrequited passion for him. A love quadrangle develops among the young lovers when the mischievous faerie, Puck, plays Cupid. Meanwhile, a group of amateur actors rehearses a badly-written play, "Pyramus and Thisbe”, for the wedding of Thesus and his bride, Hippolyta. As the actors rehearse in the woods, all soon find their lives changed by the doings of Oberon and Titania, the warring king and queen of the faeries. Magic, action, love and laughter are woven together with the unforgettable MUSIC of 1967 – The Summer of Love!

This work is widely performed around the world, and no wonder - it's about the world's most popular pastime, falling in love. But as Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all. Love is crazy, love is mad. Will love win out in the end? … Of course it will!

Remembering Jenni

Jenni RempelJenni Rempel

I love this picture of Jenni, as it reminds me of how full of fun she was and her spunky ideas!

Jenni was a gifted actress and singer with so much to offer the world, both on stage and off. We were privileged to have her as part of our troupe in Agnes of God and most recently as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

There never seems to be the right words to express our collective sorrow and anger and hurt when someone so young is taken from us much too soon. But we can at least share our pain and memories of Jenni and celebrate the brief time that we knew her.

Please join Jenni Rempel's family and friends for a celebration of her life on

The story of how this van ended up with The Emerald Pig Theatrical Society on the stage of A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream 2016 is both sad and heart-warming. Debbie Zachariuk writes,

"The summer of 2015, my husband, Darren, and I acquired this van from our nephew Michael Lozeau. Seven years ago, this van belonged to Michael’s father, Adrien Lozeau. On May 17 2009, Adrien died tragically in a drowning accident. Adrien was a wonderful, fun-loving father who loved the outdoors and, in particular, camping. This van was a hobby for him. He was in the middle of adding his personal touches to his van, but unfortunately wasn’t able to complete his dream. When Darren and I took possession of the van our plans for it were simple: We were going to continue where Adrien left off! Darren was going to spruce it up and we were going camping. Little did we know that the universe had other plans!

One Sunday afternoon in February, there was a knock at my front door. There stood Sharon Malone and Kathleen Hatley of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society. They were ecstatic because they had finally found the van they had been searching for! It was like their prayers had been answered. After Sharon and Kathleen explained their need for the van and when I realized it was going to potentially benefit so many people, I knew it was meant to be. How could we say no? I knew Adrien would be thrilled that his van was going to be used for this purpose. As Sharon put it, “All the stars were aligning.” I know that Adrien is one of those bright stars!

It’s wonderful that we have the opportunity to allow our memory of Adrien Lozeau to live on through the “DREAM VAN" and the great work of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society. I know Adrien is smiling down on us all!"
