A story about the ultimate triumph of the human spirit. Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, is an inspiring look at how hope can bloom in the most challenging environments. The story centers on Tillie, a quiet teenager who navigates a chaotic and difficult home life ruled by her eccentric, embittered mother, Beatrice. While her surroundings are bleak and unpredictable, Tillie finds a sanctuary of wonder in the world of science. Encouraged by her teacher, she embarks on a fascinating school project: raising marigold seeds that have been exposed to radiation. As Tillie’s experiment advances to the school science fair finals, her flowers become a striking metaphor for her own life – while some seeds wither under harsh conditions, others adapt to create breathtaking, resilient new blooms. In the end, the play delivers a powerful, heartwarming truth: even in the harshest soil, something beautiful can grow.

CHARACTERS: Charles: Mid-to late 40’s. An urbane, intelligent, and well-bred English mystery novelist. He is the ultimate host who invites the group to his rustic island cottage for the weekend game. Valerie: Early to mid forties. Henri’s smart and savvy older sister. She is well-turned-out and accustomed to getting her own way. Henri: Late 20’s. Valerie’s younger sister. She is shy, easily intimidated, and dresses conservatively. Elwood: Mid-fifties, balding. A confident, friendly, and powerful corporate CEO type who is well aware of his own influence. McKenzie: Late 20’s. Elwood’s girlfriend. She is a witty, extroverted fashion model with a tough exterior. Willy: Around 40. A big, friendly, and gregarious former football player who has a great sense of humor.
REHEARSALS Sunday afternoons, Monday and Thursday evenings, with some exceptions. A full calendar will be available closer to the audition dates.

Deborah: a retired nurse/teacher Age: believably retired Has a sharp tongue and a quick wit. She’s sarcastic and a little mean. We should all be afraid of Deborah. But in the end, she is a devoted friend and mother and would probably (and perhaps happily) kill for those she cares about. Jewish, Hebrew. Mother to Peter. A divorcee.
Louise: a retired teacher Age: believably retired The brains of the group. Like Deborah, she has an edge and a lack of sentimentality, but she has more self-awareness and is able to better manipulate social situations. She also has an unabashed wild side. She had (or still has) a very active sex life and is a social alcoholic (or maybe just a regular alcoholic). French Canadian. Never married.
Beatrice: a retired nurse Age: believably retired Full of wide-eyed wonder. She is often muddled and confused by the world around her, but her nature is to face the world with love and optimism. Despite all of her life experience, she is and always will be an innocent. British. A widow.
Peter: Adult son of Deborah Age: 30-40 Lost. Though he has aspirations for greatness, he suffers from Peter Pan syndrome, making him lethargic and self-centred. Despite this, he’s got a sweetness and charm that makes us hope he’ll find his way. Has a BA in English but no job and spends his days playing video games. Character burps on command (an asset but can be achieved with SFX) and shares 2-3 kisses with Sonya.
Sonya: A young Russian tour guide Age: 25-35 Very serious and practical. This should not be interpreted as mean or sarcastic, in fact, she is very sincere and passionate. She has great control over how and when she shows her passion and her delivery is witty but DRY. She is very intelligent and an amazing storyteller. While she is the obvious outsider and youngest member of the group, there is no question that she is able to be the leader. Character speaks in a Russian accent throughout and shares 2-3 kisses with Peter.

Down on his luck, Ty attempts a home invasion with the help of his ex-stripper girlfriend, Candy, in hopes of some quick cash. However, they may have picked the wrong home. The home owners, Hank and Nancy, are not your average retired couple! In fact, they seem to know more about guns and violence than Ty and Candy do. What have they gotten themselves into? And who’s really in control of this crazy evening? Only time will tell. Secrets, confessions, hijinks and hilarity rule this delightful tale about a robbery gone awry.

As the sauce simmers, bitter rivalry, mystery and zany comedy come to a rolling boil in this small town traditional Chili Cook-Off. Ava Rose wants to win her hometown chili cook-off after 26 years of failing to nab the top prize. Before the day is over, childhood secrets will be exposed, blood will be shed, a pot of chili will be tossed, and another sabotaged. If she can piece together her father’s missing Five Alarm Chili recipe and keep her assistant from maiming herself, Ava is sure to finally take home the trophy, cash prize and most importantly – prestige of the annual Memorial Chili Cook Off named for her father, Wayne Rose. This funny, heartwarming and spicy comedy by Kristen Da Silva will fill your bellies with laughs and remind us of the triumphs, challenges and joys of being human. Small town shenanigans, warm hearted fun, a possibility of romance, and maybe just a touch of nostalgia with extra zing abound in this Five Alarm Chili cook-off competition.

It’s 1932 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where the rum-running business is at it’s peak. In the aftermath of the Crash, Irving Bubbalowe and his daughter Honey, have risked everything they have to open a new gourmet restaurant. When their star – the renowned singing chef, Francois LaPlouffe, fails to appear, tonight’s grand opening is suddenly placed in jeopardy. However, when unemployed chef Frank Plunkett wanders in looking for work, Honey persuades him to masquerade as the missing LaPlouffe. The beleaguered Bubbalowe, meanwhile has to contend with Chicago gangster Alphonse Feghetti and his sidekick who have come looking for an illegal shipment of booze that, unbeknownst to Bubbalowe, has found its way into his basement. In addition, Bubbalowe has to keep at bay the hot-blooded Immigration officer, Veronica Snook, on the trail of the vanished chef, as well as suspicious teetotalling Mountie who is ready to arrest Bubbalowe for both murder and bootlegging. Madness ensues and Bubbalowe and the others create a hornet’s nest of fabricated stories and identities as they try valiantly to save the restaurant – and themselves – from both the gangsters and the law.
