SYNOPSIS:
Three retired lifelong friends and one directionless adult son embark on a bucket-list journey aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway from St. Petersburg to Beijing. Guided by a fiercely blunt Russian tour guide, the tight quarters and endless flow of vodka quickly turn this dream vacation into a hilarious, high-stakes pressure cooker. Siberian Summer is a fast-paced, heartwarming ensemble comedy about shedding emotional baggage, rediscovering independence, and finding the fierce courage to start living at any age.

CHARACTERS:

Deborah: a retired nurse/teacher
Age: believably retired
Has a sharp tongue and a quick wit. She’s sarcastic and a little mean. We should all be afraid of Deborah. But in the end, she is a devoted friend and mother and would probably (and perhaps happily) kill for those she cares about. Jewish, Hebrew. Mother to Peter. A divorcee.

Louise: a retired teacher
Age: believably retired
The brains of the group. Like Deborah, she has an edge and a lack of sentimentality, but she has more self-awareness and is able to better manipulate social situations. She also has an unabashed wild side. She had (or still has) a very active sex life and is a social alcoholic (or maybe just a regular alcoholic). French Canadian. Never married.

Beatrice: a retired nurse
Age: believably retired
Full of wide-eyed wonder. She is often muddled and confused by the world around her, but her nature is to face the world with love and optimism. Despite all of her life experience, she is and always will be an innocent. British. A widow.

Peter: Adult son of Deborah
Age: 30-40
Lost. Though he has aspirations for greatness, he suffers from Peter Pan syndrome, making him lethargic and self-centred. Despite this, he’s got a sweetness and charm that makes us hope he’ll find his way. Has a BA in English but no job and spends his days playing video games. Character burps on command (an asset but can be achieved with SFX) and shares 2-3 kisses with Sonya.

Sonya: A young Russian tour guide
Age: 25-35
Very serious and practical. This should not be interpreted as mean or sarcastic, in fact, she is very sincere and passionate. She has great control over how and when she shows her passion and her delivery is witty but DRY. She is very intelligent and an amazing storyteller. While she is the obvious outsider and youngest member of the group, there is no question that she is able to be the leader. Character speaks in a Russian accent throughout and shares 2-3 kisses with Peter.

Rehearsals will be held on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings 7 to 10pm from August 16 to November 3, 2026

Run Dates:
November 5 to 8, Albion Community Centre, Maple Ridge (7:30pm showtime, Sundays are 1pm matinees)
November 12 to 15, Heritage Hall, Pitt Meadows (7:30pm showtime, Sundays are 1pm matinees)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
– All characters sing briefly: a mash-up of folk songs, as an ensemble, with a backing track. Please be prepared to sing part of a song (of your choosing) acapella, or you can sing Happy Birthday. We’re not looking for Celine Dion, but you should be able to carry a tune.

– All characters except Sonya remove outer layers of clothing in preparation to swim. Under garments can be very modest, but the act of undressing will occur.

– EPTS is a Non-Equity, volunteer operated, not-for-profit organization. If cast, you will be required to become a member of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society (there is a $10 membership fee). Payment is due at the first readthrough, and scripts will only be issued to paid members.

– As a club, we do anticipate those cast will recognize themselves as a member of a TEAM, readily willing to help out with the show behind the scenes where possible, such as helping load-in and out of the performance facilities, etc. Teamwork makes the dream work.
